Hi everyone, as my heading implies I’m about to share about my natural hair journey. First I have to apologise for not blogging on this site for a year or more. I changed my brand and decided to blog through another site but as I will explain soon I had to return and produce a different type of blog here.
So let me explain why I’m sharing now. I mean I got to a point where it was all about my art. Yes people, I’m an Artist and business owner, I also do Leadership Coaching. Art was what this blog was originally about. I’m an Artist and that was the main thing I worked hard to promote, sell and build.
But since going natural I’ve been stopped constantly by women asking me all different types of questions about my natural hair. I wasn’t always natural. In fact all of my life my hair was pressed, then jerry curl, then relaxed. I never saw what my natural hair looked like until I turned 50.
My mother started pressing my hair from the age of 5. So I didn’t know what natural hair was all about. She did it because it was easier to manage. I got burnt many times from the pressing or the relaxing and I even went bald at the side of my head when she left the relaxer in too long. Her friend usually came over to do the process for her but that day aunty Honour wasn’t available and school was starting on the Monday so mom decided to do it herself. WHAT A DISASTER!!!.
I felt this burning sensation, so I asked my mom why. Instead of listening to me I got a good buff and she told me that I had to wait a few more minutes. Well you know the rest of that story. When she returned to wash out the chemicals…All I saw was this horrified look on her face then she started to panic. She rushed me to the sink and as she washed my hair she made these mewling sounds.
I quickly found out why. As she washed my hair I saw some going down the drain then when I wiped my hair I noticed pieces in the towel. OMG!!! That was my hair..WTH… I looked in the mirror and Good God!!! The side of my head was bald. Well…I started to cry immediately and I wondered how was I going to go to school looking like a semi-Frankenstein. I had to create a bang by bring my hair forward over the bald spot. Sigh…..
So going back. I’m doing this blog to share how I moved from never having had natural hair to where I am now. Enjoying my beautiful curls. Working it and having a goal to let it get as long as I can handle it. Stick with me and follow me on my Hair journey.
