Hi guys…… so I’m on vacation and what have I done so far???? Well I did have to sneak in some work the first 2 weeks…ugh!!! but I’ve been mainly painting my life away. I was going through artist block and I wasn’t painting like I normally do, then I came upon this Artist youtuber called “Rafi was here” and he was amazing and so inspiring that I’ve been on a painting drive…YES PEOPLE!!! I got my MOJO back!! It’s been wonderful. He is so cool and open and straight and what he said spoke straight to me. I was always doubting myself and my art because I didn’t really have a style and I didn’t really want to paint in one style. I love trying new techniques and painting different things and he basically said…forget the rules and do what you want to. He does and he is doing well, yes it takes a lot of work but continue doing what you love, the way you want to do it and the money and clients or followers will come. Every painting has an owner and that is so true. Because of his inspiring words, my excitement about painting returned and so far I’ve completed about 11 pieces since viewing that youtube video, 3 weeks ago.
I also found a woman called Intuitive Painting Workshop: Techniques, Prompts and Inspiration for a Year of Painting by Alena Hennessy, who has a workbook out that helps you develop your intuitive painting skills. She is also amazing. I love her work and I was curious to try that technique and I must say it has been very freeing and fun, so I’m in the process of following her workbook….yes I bought it on kindle and I’m doing the different exercises but not month by month. I’m moving straight to the next exercise as I complete one. If you’re into art, check her out…it’s a great workbook.
A SNEAK PEAK AT TWO OF MY PIECES
So, back to what else I’ve been doing for my vacation. I visited some Malls that I haven’t seen in years and I must say that Trinidad is just wonderful, in spite of the crime in certain areas and the little issues we have ever so often, Trinidad is like the New York of the Caribbean islands. We have big buildings, big overpasses, all of the fast food franchises you can think of, Grand Malls that look like you just stepped into a Mall in Orlando or any of the US States and more, yet we also have the lovely weather, nice beaches, friendly people, great food, parties galore and much more. I love this place. And speaking of weather. It’s rainy season right now, but so far it hasn’t been as bad as last year. In fact the rains are low and this has affected our water table so we are having a bit of a water shortage, but as my family learned early, get a lot of Water Tanks. We have 4 thousand gallon tanks so we don’t feel the shortage at all. When the water is scheduled it fills our tanks so we have no problems.
I’ve tried to relax as I mentioned in my last post by going Mayaro with some girlfriends, i also went for drinks with one of my clients who has become a close friend now and I also plan to visit a Plant shop in Gran Couva called La Vega. I really need my time away from work as does everyone. I don’t understand how some people can work for years, accumulating vacation because they think they’re too busy to take any or they just won’t. That is the road to burnout. I need to refresh and re-energise to continue doing what I do which is Coaching executives every single day. I NEED MY REST!!!!
I’ve also been relaxing in my garden ever so often to simply sit, enjoy the sounds of birds, insects, watching the beautiful blue sky, sitting with a cup of tea, enjoying the breeze and the beauty of it all, until it gets too hot or the insects start to eat me, then I go inside and I either paint, read, do research for inspiration for my pieces or I watch a netflix movie or I chat with the huzzy or I clean up some spot in the house that has been neglected for years.
I did my daughter’s room on Tuesday. Cleaned out all her old school books and all of her unused art paraphernalia that was cluttering up the space and she had a lot of old pieces and old art supplies. YEP! Like me she is artistic, she did a Degree in Visual Art and now she is an Online Graphic Designer. You can find her on instagram she’s called …qwerqcreative. Her main aim though is to become an Anime cartoonist. I’m not much into that but the artwork around that genre is very interesting and quite eye catching. I love her work( I should..she is my kid) and there was a time years ago when I had my first Art Exhibition , that I encouraged her to put up a few of her pieces which she did while at University. None sold but they were greatly admired because there was a pop to them, a drawing of your attention whether you liked the style or not. Like I said, I love her work I think she is awesome.
Back to cleaning…..I cleaned all her cupboards and I cleaned or at least neatened up her storage corner, dumping all her old school papers, notes and other crap that was just tossed into the cupboard. I found a new computer monitor that i bought her a few years back that she only used for a few months, and i also found some art supplies still in good condition. I mainly found articles of clothing that belonged to me that I hadn’t seen in ages and I was looking for. Daughters!!!!! I have 3 daughters and they tend to use my closet as a boutique to borrow whatever takes their fancy based on the event they’re attending. I don’t mind them borrowing but what ticks me off is when they don’t return the said item of clothing and when I’m looking for it I can’t find it and I have no time to go asking them because I am getting ready at that point. Argggggg!!!!!!!
Anyway, that’s girl children for you. I did my mom the same thing but with a difference, I returned what I borrowed…….um….sometimes. : ) I guess I’m getting it back three fold. Sigh. OK. What else did I do this vacation, weeellllll…..just to let you know…I’m still technically on vacation. I took all of August so I return to work in September, which means I still have one more week. For that week I will continue to paint as much as I can, update my blogs….I’ve been a bit delinquent there as you realise, visit the Mall again, go see a few movies, do an upmarket, paint some more, and just do whatever the hell I want or feel to that day. That’s what a vacation is about. I don’t need to travel, checking out my country is what I’ve been doing for the past few vacations….going on tours her in Trinidad and discovering the great and amazing places and sites we have right here. I haven’t done any tours this vacation and even though Carifesta is happening at this moment and there are jazz events, musicals, plays, pan concerts, foreign Dance performances and most are free, I haven’t felt the pull to attend anything..yet…we will see how it goes.
OH…What is Carifesta? The Caribbean Festival of Arts, CARIFESTA, has assumed a pre-eminent place among the elements that define and give expression to the uniqueness of our Caribbean reality. Like other significant institutions such as cricket, CXC, and CARICOM that symbolize a Caribbean commonality, the Festival reinforces our unity in the midst of our splendid diversity.
The creation of the West Indies Federation was marked by the staging of a Festival in Trinidad, through the auspices of the Extra Mural Department of the then University College of the West Indies. This celebratory spirit must have infused the artistic community of the Region, for it was at a regional gathering of artists in Guyana in 1970, that the idea of a grand Caribbean festival was conceived.
The enthusiasm of the artists attending a Caribbean Writers and Artists Convention in Georgetown in 1966 and again in 1970 during Guyana’s Independence and Republic celebrations, found favour with Prime Minister Forbes Burnham who spearheaded the conversion of the idea into a resplendent exposition of artistic forms and cultural artifacts that became the first Caribbean Festival of Arts in Guyana in 1972.
Beyond the dramatic and inspirational performances on stage, the music, the dance and folklore, the artistic manifestations of painting, sculpture, craft, beyond the exhibition of our cultural creativity, our way of life, CARIFESTA engenders a nostalgic pride among Caribbean people, of who and what we are, what we are capable of achieving, what we possess, our peculiarities and similarities, and that which is excellent among us. A sense of warm rivalry in presenting to the world our best inspires the preparation of national contingents which separately and collectively showcase the ingenuity and talents of nation states and the Caribbean as a whole.
That’s CARIFESTA. I’ve never been…too shame…..but my friends have been raving about the performances and I know quite a few friends who are taking part but like I said, I haven’t felt the push to do the shows yet….taking it slow and keeping it low keyed this vacation. So people, that’s it for now, check you next week and be good, be safe and luv you guys, later.
