Hi guys….my last post was about the woes of having your own business. This post is a continuation based on the points I listed before and what I started to share .

Competencies and recruiting the Right Talent

Hiring the right person for the job isn’t as easy and it sounds. Most organisations have their recruitments processes to short list the hundreds of applicants then step two is the different assessments or tests an individual has to go through and finally whe n the list has been brough down to 2 or three individuals, they pick the winner, or is it. Most people theses days go through training to be able to handle all the interviews. They beat the interview, get the job, do their best for the probationary period then when they’re made permanent that’s when you see the real worker or not.

There are general competencies required for every job and usually you hire the person with these qualifications or experience. There are also other competencies that a person needs. What are those?

Here are the competencies we need:

  • Self-management and personal wellness.
  • Active listening and effective communication.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Good Teamwork and collaboration.
  • Leadership and project management abilities.
  • Professionalism and work ethic.

i’ve had to hire and fie individuals. My attitude is on of you get rewarded for performance. You can’t work for me if you continue to make mistakes despite my coaching, training and giving you 2 chances, then it means that you don’t fit within this job and I would be doing you a disservice by keeping you. So I go through goal setting with the person and i try to get them another job that suits them better. Daily, I see people who complain about their jobs and their bosses, but the real issus is that they’ve either been there too long and now feel a level of entitlement or they aren’t doing their passion. That one thing that they really enjoy doing and can do it everyday without getting paid for it. That’s your true passion and most people are in jobs because they needed one at the time and they have bills to pay or a family to take care of. They aren;\’t in the field they really love and that is why they complain.

most people who apply for a job a nice people, but I want a nice person who can do the job they applied for as well as show initiative and be professional in how they carry themselves. They must be enthusiastic about what they do and open to change and open to doing different things. Don’t let me hire you and the day I ask you to do something a bit different you’re suddenly spouting ” that’s not in my job spec so no I’m not doing it”…then don’t do it right out the door. Thank God small companies don’t have Unions because they tend to help these workers ,who have a bad attitude, to keep the bad attitude, by advising them of how they can continue to not do their job….just ridiculous. Anyway, let me not go off on a rant about Unions.



I love technology, I think it’s the greatest thing and so much fun to use. You can learn so much with the different platforms yet people still make excuses about not knowing how to do certain things. Lazy much? I’ve used technology to help build my business via developing, my own website, I use Zoom for presentations and face to face coaching, I’m on Instagram to sell my Art and I blog not just here but also on my 2 business sites. I’ve learned most of what I know…painting, blogging, DIY websites, designing, Youtubing….everything by using technology. But the larger corporations tend to take a while to build technology due the high cost, so some are still a bit archaic in how they do things, but with societies today you have to keep up with the times….and this is the time of technology. As technologies change practically at the speed of light, it’s vital for companies to innovate or be left behind

Technology also helps a business understand its cash flow needs and preserve precious resources such as time and physical space. With proper technology in place, executives can save time and money by holding meetings over the Internet instead of at corporate headquarters. Whatever industry you are operating in, technology helps your customers access all the information they need to successfully interact with your company.

Business technology helps automate back office functions, such as record keeping, accounting and payroll. Business owners can also use technology to create secure environments for maintaining sensitive business or consumer information. Business technology can help small businesses improve their communication processes. Businesses are affected by changes in the technological environment. Technological change offers risks, opportunities and threats to businesses. Some businesses can leverage changing technology to improve products and processes or even create new products and processes that will expand markets and profits.


What are the advantages of technology?

OK. this isn’t something I’m familiar with. I remember reading or hearing a talk about it but I’m going to have to research this. So everything share now is based on what I found:

A dying art……why do I say that?…..well I say it mainly based on my country and the poor customer service that occurs here. Unfortunately Trinidad has good customer service for the Tourist but for everything else, it needs a lot of work and improvement. Trinis need to understand that customer service is core to a businesses success, not technology or exploding data or even recruitment. We need to give our customers excellent service so that they come back for more and therefore your business continues. No customers, no business. Our attitude is that our customers are our partners, we don’t just want to get the business, we want to stay their partners and continue to help them as for as long as they need help with anything. Their success is our success.

We can all provide great customer service, but I believe that the most important ingredient is that your staff, every one of them must, like people. You must like your customers no matter how difficult they are. You must also have an attitude that you are there to help your customer solve a problem. You are there to help, you’re not doing them a favour, they are not a bother,… are in that job because of them so treat them the way you would love to be treated.
