It’s Christmas Soon!!!

Hi guys…. I love Christmas!! I just get a really nice feeling around Christmas time, that is stronger than any other time during the year. It’s a special, warm, happy, full of love feeling. I dont know why it’s so strong at Christmas but it is.

I enjoy all the activities that occur at Christmas, especially here in Trinidad. The tradition here is to make sure your home is freshly painted, new curtains or drapes are put up, that there is the traditional food available for anyone who might visit. Such as ham, pastelles, turkey, sorrel, punch a creme, sweetbread, pork, freshly baked bread and much more.

Kids expect gifts to be in abundance under the Christmas  tree and that is the next favourite thing. The Christmas tree. I tend to be the one decorating the tree. My kids say I dont give them a chance to help, but it’s not that. When I’m ready to do the tree they aren’t  and by the time they are ready, I’ve already finished the tree. Go figure??? Yes they tend to turn up when I’m done.

You also get family coming to visit in abundance and Christmas music and parang is being played everywhere. Yep I just love it. This month (November) and in December it’s all about the preparation. Buying the gifts early if possible because most Trinis tend to buy gifts last minute and I mean the week of Christmas.

I prefer to get everything as early as I can because I hate the rush and the crowds in the Malls. This year, money is a little tight so we have to cut down on the number of gifts, but what we do is, we started a family chat and everyone puts their gift list there. That way you don’t buy something for someone and they dont like it, which is what used to happen when they were a bit younger. Now they get exactly what they need or want.

I tend to ask for art supplies at least for the last 3 years. If I can avoid buying my own supplies I get them to purchase them for me. 😁👍plus I get them what they want so they can’t complain. We may not have a snowy Christmas but we have beautiful sunny days with short showers later on Christmas day to cool down the place. It rains every Christmas in Trinidad. Showers of blessings we say over here.

There are many family “limes” all over and after staying up until late, on Christmas day itself most dont get up early except the young kids. We wake up around 9am to have breakfast together, then we clear up and move to the living room to distribute and open the gifts. To me that’s the most fun.

A Parang group

I enjoy seeing my kids enjoy what they get and we will hang around in there for a while chatting and sharing about different things. Then gradually everyone moves off to go to their room to relax and do whatever they feel to. My husband and I tend to go take a nap or watch Netflix. A fun Christmas movie that is really nice and full of love. Some families blast Parang music all day while the family members are relaxing and the kids are playing noisily with their new toys, such fun times. If you read my last post with the short story of Christmas in Mayo, there you get a feel for how Christmas is spent in the countryside.

I hope everyone of you have a great Christmas with lots of family love, food, fun, laughter and peace. Check you at the next blog post.
