Competition: Are We Built to Compete?

Hi guys….I’ve been back doing the Upmarkets to sell my Art and as I sit behind my table, I look at all the activities around me and I observe the maneuvering going on with the different humans. There are those who quietly speak ill of other vendors because in their minds that person got the spot they wanted. Then there are those who watch how well your items are selling and they suddenly begin to complain that your storage containers are taking up too much space. Or there are the vendors who you can see the eye of jealousy as they watch others get sales while they sell nothing.

Competition is an inevitable part of life.  You might come up with the greatest idea for a product but know that in the blink of an eye someone is going to steal the idea and build on it. Nothing is totally owned by anyone. I guess that is why China is the Industrial forger of the world. They are seen as the country where you can get anything duplicated for pennies, but be assured that the quality will be questionable.

This is the difficulty when you sell in markets, others see what you have and attempt to copy or make something closely resembling it, but I always say you can’t copy someone exactly and as I once heard another artist say, if they copy your work, it’s a complement because it must be very good. Competition can bring out either the best in people or the worst. One thing I know for sure, is that in these markets you meet and make friends with some really nice people.

That’s what keeps me coming, even when I don’t make any sales. I also learned that its better to sell in markets where the number of vendors are not in the hundreds. Too many choices for the customers so they get confused and less vendors are able to make any sales which isn’t good for those who make their living this way.

Luckily, this is my second business, my Coaching business is what makes the main money for me but I’m working hard to build my online business with my art, printable planners, items with my art and recently my second print on demand business ..sports tees.

The thing with me is I love creating so when I go blank with my paintings, which isn’t often, then I’m also working on putting new designs on my 3 print on demand site. The sites I use are Redbubble, Teespring, Zazzle. I was on Printful but left due to it being a pay site whereas the others a free.

For me as I dont live in the United States, although I’m trying to sell online it is sometimes a bit more difficult because some of these platforms want your US ID and that’s not happening. If they can’t take payments via paypal then I tend to run into some issues. But I went off track there. We were talking about competition and are humans built to compete?

Yes they are. Some live to compete and others dont but we all have to do it at some point in our lives, whether to get a job versus the many candidate vying for the same job, or within an organization itself competing with other team members for the same vacancy or promotion.

The main thing is how we deal with the disappointment that comes from competing. Sometimes you win and other times you lose, its how you handle both. If you win do you lord it over others or do you accept it graciously without running it in the face s of the losers if you lost, do you get bitter and speak negatively of the winners or do you accept the loss and think about what you can learn from the situation to be better the next time around.

Competition is good for the soul as it pushes you to be better at what you do or it pushes you to be more creative and to think outside of the box. Our brains can get lazy if things were the same and we had no competition. It also teaches us a level of humility when we get too big for our britches sometimes because we are doing well or we have no one going as well as us in that industry we feel we are the monopoly so we throw our weight around and the ego gets in the way. The way society is today, nothing lasts forever or even for a day. You’re the star today and the plummeting comet tomorrow. So enjoy the good times and because of competition continue to think of innovative ways to make what you do be better or of a greater quality. It pays off I the end. So people we compete because it’s in our nature at least most of us and though completion we get the variety of products that we do. As an artist as written in “Steal like an Artist” we copy because why reinvent the wheal but put your spin on it, don’t copy someone else’s work and try to palm it off as your own. That dishonest and unethical. So guys.. check you again soon and enjoy whatever competition you may be in, competing is part of life.
